Hicks in Egyptville

Normally not what I would consider in the same category as my artwork, I've decided to post a couple photographs I took while traveling in Egypt last summer. Travel photos are more for me to remember where I've been than a piece of work with any message whatsoever. My reasons for posting these, you ask? Well, they both required a bit of digital patching. I've finally gotten myself Photoshop and, well, perfect storm and all that. Hope you enjoy the results. The first required to be simply put together, being a panorama. The second was a bit more intensive, as I had to remove a friend from the periphery of the picture.

Art is... Food?!

I was recently tasked with writing a new artist's statement. I always find it interesting, writing about my art. I've never been able to really boil it down into one concise... thing. Whenever somebody asks me what style art I make, I always say "mixed media" as a sort of cop-out. It's a cover-all term that describes my work but only to a certain extent. Regardless, I've decided to post my new artist's statement here for your reading pleasure.

"Art is more or less the exact same thing as, what else? Food. Take a dash from here, a pinch from there, throw it all together and let it simmer. I’ve always viewed my art as a good stew. I never realized before that this notion rings true for the entirety of the art world, as well. An artist creates his work, lets it cook until perfection, then serves it to old, crusty, demanding patrons. They may or may not get a tasting for the artist in question. If they do, the artist’s works become akin to hot cakes. It is consumed. If not, well, then… the art gets shit out and flushed away.
Through art, I want to create conversations. I am by no means a serious artist; I love nothing more than to tackle a serious, taboo subject matter and run in through the dirt. Great art has multiple layers to it. Take a serious issue, present in an outlandish manner, dip it in dark humor, cover it in a wrapper of artistic craftsmanship, throw in a pun or two for good measure, and you have my artistic process. Every idea should speak for itself. Good art may be 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration but the art I aim to create, the kind that has something to say, is just the opposite. Furthermore, I think as artists, most tend to get stuck in the idea of creating a style. I find this idea completely unaccommodating. If each of my works look completely different, then so be it. Like a good stew, I love combining painting with sculpture, photography with mixed media. Granted, bodies of work are important but if I have to work in the same vein for the entirety of my life, may God (in other words, Oprah) strike me down now.
                  I hope people take away different meanings from my work. I want to get in their heads, like a bad case of food poisoning. I want them to think long and hard about what they’ve seen, let it ruminate in their minds, then pray to God-Oprah to let their minds be at peace. Art doesn’t always have to be pretty. Art can be pugnacious, ridiculous, or even pointless, or even all three as well as being beautiful. Through my work, I want to change opinions and create new ones. I want people to take position on subjects they never realized they had a position on before."

Interestingly enough, while writing this, I found two older artist's statements that I had written. I decided to not read them because if anything in my process had changed, I didn't want to get any ideas in my head about keeping one, consistent style. After finishing my new statement, I did go back and read them. Surprisingly, I found certain threads that held true throughout all of them. Just for an interesting comparison, I've decided to post them here. The first is a short paragraph from April 2009, attempting to describe my artistic style in a short paragraph. The second is my artist's statement I wrote while in high school, back in late 2006.

"If I were tasked with the goal of finding one, cohesive blanket statement for my artistic “style,” I figure it would be a rather complex and difficult situation. When approaching a subject, each is usually very different from the prior. While I feel there are certain themes that I can always identify as underlying in each of my new projects, it may not be apparent to anyone else. Furthermore, I do not have any particular visual style; there are no particular cues that would denote a typical “Matthew Getter piece.” Rather, I have a certain mindset when beginning a new work. I believe that concept is equally important to execution. I can mull over a problem for hours before I even begin the actual creation. When I’ve gotten myself to a suitable point of readiness, I’ll often use anything, often everything, in the creation. Mixed media is fantastic; I believe all the arts should correlate to one another. I’m not averse to mixing photography with sculpture, painting with digital media, string, garbage bags, nature, a nice font, even a tire or two for good measure. In my eyes, I feel my visual style, if anything, is a hodge-podge of everything good and bad. For me, the most important part of a piece of work, ultimately, is the message. Out of all my finished works, this is the one similarity. I believe a piece should have some sort of concept behind it. Art should not only inspire emotion but also thought, conversation, controversy. Otherwise, it’s just meaningless eye candy for rich people to look at instead of a meaningful societal comment. If that’s the case, I may as well study law.

"To create art is to emit an unbridled emotion from the conscience of the viewer. Successful art should be able to produce an intense emotion, whether it be positive or negative. Artwork does not need to be beautiful or make one feel kind and tender. Some of the most evocative artwork forces the viewer to feel repulsed, shocked, or even offended. The creation of my artwork explores these angles, trying to develop methods to further such emotions.
         Through art, I attempt to elicit the most extreme emotion possible from my viewing audience. By using unorthodox means, I gain the advantage of having the curiosity of the viewer. Once attained, the artwork can effortlessly prove its point. This method defines my work. I am able to tackle issues such as human vices, constant change, and overindulgence through the use of such mediums as blood, tires, and tattered grandmother frocks.
Art has the inane ability to be beautiful, yet also be repugnant, ridiculous, or even pointless. By viewing my work, I hope that people will feel extremely disgusted or unusually disturbed rather than merely satisfied. Viewers must savor their utmost extreme feelings rather than settle for mediocre reactions. If a work can evoke such powerful emotions, it serves its designated purpose. Art does not have to fit the common perception associated with it."

A Hint of Class, A Dash of Sophistication

Here are a few more photos that I've been working on lately.  They're all storefront window displays, most of them from upper 5th Avenue (they seem to care about their displays the most). I want to try to make them continually more non-descript. I want to create a feeling of many layers - to push you in but then pull you back out again. In a lot of the photos, you can clearly tell where the mannequins are, though hopefully the other elements blend casually into one another. To achieve this, I'm probably going to start searching out more distinct storefront configurations. Art galleries and closed stores have given me some success, so I'll likely start there.

As for the class and sophistication, that very likely won't last very long into the next month. Once I get momentum going, it's just all going downhill, but hey, you gotta have something to knock down in the first place, right?

After a long break from "stuffs," I'm back and ready to make more "works." The last few months have been a bit trying on my willpower: my computer broke, never to be fixed again, so no digital whatsits. Therefore, I also lacked the ability to update about the small amount of work I did do on here. However, despite my crestfallen spirit, I did manage to dream up a plethora of new projects. Hopefully, I'll be much more productive in the future (at least for some time, anyhow).

On a side note, I've decided to write a novel. I have always enjoyed writing. Perhaps this summer, everything came together as just the right impetus for me. Suffice to say at this point, the plot revolves around an evil plot at world domination in a post-apocalyptic "New Earth" and will rely heavily on the use of satire and caricature. As of now, I'm still brainstorming ideas, but as this side project progresses, turns into a main project, and consumes my very lifeforce, I'll fill you in more.

Because of that, he's one of the people I find very fascinating (not simply because he is scary but rather he's scary AND the Pope at the same time!) Anyhow, I felt inspired to turn the Pope into what he epitomizes most: death metal.

For the past couple weeks, I've been taking part in a local collaboration called "we." We were given a 10x10 inch block and told "GO!" (it was shouted at us, or at least me, as they handed out the panels). The panels are then traded three times between three different, random artists.

Block 1
I've been itching to work on collage lately, so that's precisely what I've been doing. I tried to keep it open-ended and vague while at the same time making it so the person who receives it thinks, "What the hell is this?," gets frustrated, and throws it at a baby.

Block 2
I enjoyed working on this block. The original had a few strange elements, like the holographic eye and the sculpted, eerily-realistic-feeling tongue which fed into the idea of collage. I struggled a bit in the middle but I'm happy with the paper-cutout/comic vibe going. Whoever gets it next, keep it nice... OR ELSE.

And then there was this. I was literally sweating from nerves shortly after I got it. What was I supposed to do with this superflat egg? It reeked of spray paint. It made me wonder how two artists and a month's worth of work went into it. Then I got an idea, a wonderful, awful idea... a stupid idea.

I'm working on the egg panel now. Once its done, I'll put up photos. I'm really curious to see what happens to my other two. I'll post shots of those, too, once the show is up.

Some Draw'ns

Here are a few recent figure drawings I've done. As you can tell, I've been experimenting and playing around, trying to explore different styles (Due to the fact that I really want to perfect conte drawing like the Old Masters [Bernini, Bronzino, etc.], this experimentation happens when I get too frustrated with the uber-delicacy involved in Renaissance drawing and need a break. Ironically enough, I have no desire to use such refined methods in any other media I employ).

And Number Two

For whatever reason, I decided to post this piece first. It is a recent photograph, a one-off at the Met. However, the whole idea of using the reflection as the subject and as a means to create multiple levels within the photo is something I've been interested in this past spring. I'll post more of my recent photo work soon (and trust me, I have more).

PS: I wanted to include a wonderful pun... and I did! If you didn't catch it already, you need to have your eyes examined by a medical professional.

Number One

After forever and a day of internal debate, I've finally decided share my work with you, Internet (therefore a few friends, mostly random strangers and probably a pedophile or two).

What would make me want to do this after so long, you ask? It's simple. I realized I've been hoarding the majority of my work from the past few years. Before there is some catastrophic accident that destroys any or all of my work (Hurricane Katrina: The Sequel or anything involving Gary Busey - you can never be too safe when it involves that man) I figured I'd immortalize it with you by my side, Internet.

I'll be posti... Wait, what are you saying? "Why is it called Punny Art Blog?" "Aren't artists supposed to be creative?" At which point, I ask "Why are you talking in that terrible Brooklyn accent?" I'll continue to explain that not all art is or needs to be serious. A good title can make or break a piece. I therefore opted out of thinking up the cleverest titled ever by choosing the generic title to evoke all the same feelings of the most pun-tastic title ever. After all that, I end with a random macguffin and you'll be none the wiser.

Anyhow, I' ll be posting everything from drawings to photo work; you'll see a lot of collage along with some mixed-media sculpture and even some ceramics. Hell, maybe you'll even see some video or sound work. Ooooh. Aahhh. I'll post new works as they are finished, as well as older recent works.
